![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() General Washington's Tavern Porter (Yards Brewing Company) I grabbed this bottle as part of a mixed six-pack while down in New Jersey for work. I've tried a few beers from Yards but it was quite some time ago. I'm looking forward to this one as it seems pretty unique and interesting. From the Yards site: "By George, I think we've got it. Days of debate and deliberation at Independence Hall were often followed by nights of debate and deliberation (and a few libations) at the City Tavern, where our forefathers would gather to exchange revolutionary ideas. Rich and warming with a deep garnet hue, the molasses-based Tavern Porter™ reflects Washington's admiration of Philadelphia-style porters and follows a recipe Washington used himself, when brewing beer to satisfy his thirsty field officers." Here we go...
Pour - super rich and dark brown to almost black in color with some auburn highlights and a crazy thick head. Looks a draught pour!
Aroma - lots of molasses, dark rum, brown sugar, coffee grounds, fudge and some earthiness. Taste - lots of cocoa, coffee, sweet molasses, caramel and brown sugar. Its sweet but nice and roasty as well. I really dig the added sweetness and the higher ABV. Plenty of robust toasty flavors to go along with the caramel and molasses (and hints of licorice). Lots of flavor! This is a great beer for in front of the fire.
Overall - Very nice porter, I really enjoyed this beer and wish I had more. A very pleasant surprise!
Would I buy more of it? - yes, I wish I could get Yards beers up here in MA. Next time I am in the Philly area visiting family I'll need to pick more of this up.
Note - if you like brewing history and are interested in knowing a little more about the association our first president had with beer CHECK OUT this article that was published on BeerHistory.com It provides a good deal of information on the subject.
