I bought a copy of this book at Rabelais, a food and drink bookstore, in Portland, Maine. I am not sure exactly what I was expecting other than a bunch of historical information about brewing in the Pacific Northwest. That is exactly what I got. This book is part reference manual and part historical tribute. The pages are racked with great information about the facts and figures of breweries in the PNW as well as some amazing historical photos. There are some great articles about regional brewing practices and early brewing equipment included along with some great stories of the early brewers out West during some pretty tough times. A bulk of this book is written as an encyclopedic breakdown of the towns of OR and WA and each of their respective brewing histories. For example: TWISP (Washington): The Twisp Brewing & Malting Co. began operating in 1902, but it was out of business the next year. Entries like this vary in length considerably and provide a very interesting look at just how widespread and localized brewing was during the 1800s. Definitely a book filled with beer trivia and information that could aid in both research and one's own beer history prowess. Cheers Gary and Gloria!
